'King Arthur'

The present inquiry has run its course from
literary truth to physical reality - from the words of Geoffrey of
Monmouth and Chretien de Troyes, notably... to standing, as Perceval
did, on the conical hill and looking down upon the site of the Grail
Castle across its arm of the sea.
The day I stood there they were unloading stone at
Peel Castle, just as the Sone de Nansai manuscript described it, from
the quarry across the arm of the sea. The bright sunlight danced upon
the dark blue waters between there and Ireland, as Chretien said. Ten
minutes later, after the small punt had brought us to the Isle itself, a
sudden squall drove the rain in stinging runnels across our faces and
forced us to shelter under the castle tower… the sun came out across the
rosy, golden sky in the direction of faraway blue Ireland just emerging
from the mist.
The other pilgrims on the Isle felt as I did - as
if they were on holy ground - and bent down and touched the small
grasses and pink flowers on the Rocky Sward.
